Gardening for Seniors

Seniors often have free time on their hands to enjoy activities they love. For seniors looking to find a new hobby to get involved in, gardening is often highly recommended. Gardening is a fun hobby for seniors that can actually have some great health benefits as well!

Garden has been used as a form of therapy for many seniors and older adults. This is known as horticulture therapy. Being outside and getting your hands working on a project have been shown to provide excellent health benefits.

Here are some ways the therapy helps:

  • Increased bone density (due to Vitamin D absorption from being outdoors)
  • Improved sleep cycles
  • Improvement in attention
  • Reduction in chronic pain
  • Reduction of falls
  • Alleviate depression
  • Decrease anxiety
  • Increase a sense of stability
  • Increase a sense of control

Gardening is a way for seniors to care and nurture for a living organism. They feel empowered to take on this task and watch it thrive. The activity can be very calming and soothing for them.

One of the great things about gardening is that there are ways for seniors to participate in the activity indoors as well as outdoors. While an outdoor garden can certainly provide great benefits such as soaking in the suns rays and breathing in fresh air; it is not an activity that can be enjoyed if they live in a climate that experiences cold winter months.

There are many indoor gardening systems that seniors can purchase that allow them to easily grow plants at home. When homes are filled with fresh plants, they release more oxygen into the air, which is great for breathing and is a mood booster. In addition, the colorful plants add a nice touch of decor to the home. Indoor gardens are an excellent way to create a welcoming, warm environment in a home. This is especially perfect for seniors that reside in a living community as they can make their space feel more like home.

Gardening can be a social activity as well. If they have a garden at home, seniors can invite friends over to enjoy with them. Many senior communities encourage gardening programs for the residents to become involved. There may even be ways to get involved in your local community to garden such as in parks or public areas.
