How To Manage Growing Old… Alone

Many seniors have gone through their adult life being completely independent. They do not have kids and some lived their lives without a partner. Nearly one-quarter of seniors over age 65 in America are single and childless. Growing old is difficult enough even with help. Not having a familial support system can make it all the more challenging.

Seniors are forced to realize the fact that as they age, their social circle can begin to dwindle. The likelihood of losing a friend to illness or old age is all too common. Many seniors that have opted not to start a family have built a strong friend group. These friends may be people they have known for many years. They feel like family. Similarly, senior couples that have not had kids rely heavily on each other for emotional and financial support. But the risks are still the same and growing old can result in become widowed.

For seniors, social interaction is very important to maintaining a vibrant life. If you have little family, are widowed, or have fewer friends than before, there is a need to rebuild your social network. Joining a senior center, getting a part-time job, or volunteering your time can be a great way to meet new people and make some friends. It may have been a long time since you have made new friends, but remember that there are many other seniors out there that are looking for companionship as well.

Greater than the need for a social life, growing old alone means that there is not anyone around to help take care of you and your needs. You may have questions that you aren’t sure where to find the answers to; such as how to manage financially, what to do when your health declines, or how you can still complete your daily chores or activities without assistance.
