Identifying Alzheimer’s With These 4 Common Warning Signs

November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month! Over 5.2 million people over the age of 65 suffer from this disease. We want to spread awareness about this disease by sharing the common warning signs for Alzheimer’s. Recognizing these symptoms before they worsen allows you to be proactive in preventing injury or harm.

Memory Loss

While slight memory loss can be common with individuals of any age, in patients with Alzheimer’s, memory loss is much more significant. Patients will forget important dates or request to hear the same information more than once, as they have difficulty retaining new information. They might forget information that would normally come naturally: such as driving familiar routes or performing every day tasks around the house.

Confusion

Alzheimer’s patients will often experience confusion in terms of people, places, or time. They may easily forget where they are or how they got there. Patients can often become confused when communicating as well. They may misuse a word that would normally be very common to use or they may forget a word altogether. This confusion makes having a conversation with the patient difficult as they are unable to form the words to communicate normally.

Misplacing Items

Often times, Alzheimer’s patients will misplace every day items in unusual places. They might put their car keys in the freezer or leave their toothbrush in the kitchen. They have difficulty remembering where things go which causes them to frequently lose items.

Changes in Mood or Personality

Many patients that suffer from Alzheimer’s will experience a significant change in behavior. They may not enjoy activities they once loved, such as participating in a hobby. Or, they will avoid social activities such as family gatherings or meetings with friends. They can often feel anxious when they are outside of their comfort zone. But, they can also become upset while at home or with friends and family. They are quick to become fearful, suspicious, or anxious.
