Learning to Grow Old

Seniors tend to become routine in their lifestyle. They feel as though they should be able to perform the same tasks they could throughout their lives without modification. In fact, they do not even think about having to make any changes, because they do not realize there is a need to change.

One of the most difficult obstacles for seniors to overcome is learning how to grow old. With aging bodies comes the need to adapt. This can be tiring not only physically, but mentally as well.

The aging senior body experiences bones becoming more brittle, muscles deteriorating, and sometimes their minds begin to slip. Seniors that could once run 10 miles a day in their youth may not be able to perform such a feat due to a decreased lung capacity, for example.

Whether you have had a heart surgery, experienced a stroke, or are suffering from arthritis, the body needs to slow down. Most seniors have had to undergo surgeries to resolve any health issues that typically come with age. During this time especially, it is important to realize that a slow healing process is the best way to maintain health.

It becomes very important to listen to what your body is telling you. Really listen to how your body feels after performing a strenuous task, even if it is as common as gardening or taking a short walk. No one understands your body like you do, so take the time to feel. If something doesn’t feel right, it may be time to take a step back and slow down.

Aside from listening to the body, the ultimate struggle for seniors is actually admitting to themselves that they are growing old and that slowing down is a necessity. Seniors can be stubborn. They do not want to admit to themselves that they are not as agile as they used to be. To admit this makes them feel as though they are defeated. They are slowly becoming a different person and that can feel infuriating. They are changing.

The truth is that everybody grows old. The key to maintaining a healthy lifestyle is admitting that you need to make a change for the sake of your body. It will ultimately be much better for your quality of life in the long run. There is no shame in growing old. Adapt to what your body needs and you will be able to live out the rest of your days happily at a pace that feels best for you.
