Senior Bullying

As adults, we consider bullying to be a term more commonly associated with younger generations, such as children or teenagers. However, bullying can be common with any age group. Surprisingly enough, seniors can be the victims of bullying as well. In fact, 20% of seniors have been bullied by their peers.

When does senior bullying occur? Most seniors that are bullied are living in senior communities such as nursing homes and assisted-living facilities or they are involved in senior centers for social activity. These settings are much like a school environment of your youth.

Despite the difference in age, peer-to-peer bullying among seniors is similar to what bullying looks like in adolescence. Seniors are the victims of verbal abuse such as petty name-calling or criticism; social isolation such as rumors/gossip or being refused to join certain social groups; or physical abuse such as threats of violence or sexual assault.

One of the reasons senior bullying can be so concerning is that many seniors suffer from ailments that can either make them more aggressive and cause them to bully others or they have ailments that make them weak and vulnerable so they are unable to realize they are being bullied or cannot stand up for themselves.

No matter what age, bullying can have severe effects on the victims. But for seniors especially, the effects can further aggravate health and life issues. Seniors require a strong sense of social acceptance. Being ostracized by their peers can cause emotional distress which greatly decreases their quality of life. It can also effect changes to their health.

Seniors bodies tend to be more sensitive as well. Any physical abuse can cause major issues to their body. Being pushed down on a playground at 6-years-old is one thing, but being pushed and shoved as a senior can cause devastation.

As a senior, there are ways that you can prevent your exposure to bullying. When searching for a senior living facility, consult with an in-house representative what their policy is on bullying. Be aware of what they do to prevent it or resolve it when it occurs. Ask the same questions of the staff at a senior community center. You need to know what the staff will be able to do for you if this occurs.
