Time To Get Active!

Staying active and practicing daily physical activity is important for people of any age. For seniors, it may be even more important to make time for exercise. Having an active lifestyle can provide a better quality of life and help keep you healthy. It can help you improve your health and make you feel more independent as you age.

To be physically active does not mean that you need to be intense in your regime. You do not need to lift heavy weights or run for fast or long that you feel faint. Moderate exercise and light activity is much better than simply opting not to practice a workout routine.

There are lots of exercise activities that can be tailored to be gentle on seniors ailing bodies. Most YMCA’s, senior centers, or local gyms have classes designed for seniors. Consider participating in activities such as:

  • Yoga
  • Dancing
  • Running/Walking

You do not need to have a membership to a gym to participate in physical activity. Some things you can do to stay active and fit are:

  • Walking your dog
  • Taking a walk around the block with a friend
  • Gardening outside

For seniors, getting any kind of physical activity is important whether it is light or moderate or heavy. It is much better than being inactive. In fact, inactivity can be much riskier for seniors. It can result in deteriorating health which can lead to more doctor visits and risk of disease or illness.

Aside from being beneficial to your physical health, an active lifestyle can be excellent for your mental health. Regular exercise is a great way to manage stress. Exercising releases endorphin’s which have a positive effect on your mood. Your overall quality of life will greatly increase. Your body will feel energized and your mood will be up. Plus, exercising is a great way to maintain a social life, another essential activity to leading a happy life!

There are many options for seniors when it comes to places to work out or ways to stay active. If you want more information on ways you can adopt a physically fit lifestyle, contact one of our Service Coordinators for guidance!
